The Hradcany
Hradčany
At the birth of the first Czechoslovak Republic in 1918, the great Art Nouveau master Alphons Mucha created the amazingly innovative postage stamps called the Hradcany. Neither Mucha, nor the new nation's postal administration, nor the printers who eventually produced the Hradcany stamps had any experience creating postage stamps. Further, because the Great War (World War I) had just ended, materials were also scarce. Thus, the inks, gums, and papers used for these stamps varied with each of their many printings. Finally, the typographic technology used to print the stamps created small flaws in every stamp. It is possible to uniquely identify nearly 7000 Hradcany postage stamps.
The first stamps in this issue were released to the public on December 18, 1918. Although remainders were overprinted and surcharged for for other postal purposes throughout the 1920's, the issue was officially withdrawn on April 30, 1921.
Při zrodu první Československé republiky v roce 1918, velký secesní malíř Alfons Mucha vytvořil úžasně inovativní poštovní známky, které se nazývají Hradčany. Ani A. Mucha, ani národní poštovní úřad, dokonce ani tiskárny, které nakonec známky Hradčany tiskly, neměly žádné zkušenosti s výrobou známek. Tim a díky tomu, že po první světové válce byl tiskový materiál vzácný, použilo se rozmanitých druhů barev, lepů a papírů. Typografická technologie v těchto letech použitá, vytvořila malé nedostatky na každé známce, čimž je možné identifikovat skoro každou známku Hradčany, a to v počtu sedmi tisíc.
První známky této emise byly zveřejněny dne 18. prosince 1918. Tato emise a její přebytky byly přetištěny a použity pro různé poštovní účely až do dvacátých let a oficiálně staženy 30. dubna 1921.
